I think your take on Extreme is right. It changes how you play the completely, which is good in some ways, but not all. The game comes all about having overwhelming troop number superiority. It's fine if you're playing the strongest factions like Cao Cao, Yuan Shao and Dong Zhuo but it's just not a fun experience as the smaller dudes.
