The only remaining Byzantine castle of the region is in the beautiful village of Fanari, located on a forested hill at an altitude of 450 meters, 15 km northwest of Karditsa. This is the best preserved fortress in all of Western Thessaly and dates from the 12th century. Note the lovely stone-built cottages of the area too.

Its location on a hill makes it visible from far distance. Fanari was first mentioned in the autocratic golden bull of 1289. The byzantine village Fanari has been mentioned many times during the 14th century. The strategic location of the village at the connection from Epirus to Thessaly has been from importance also for the Ottomans in the post-byzantine times. They kept Fanari as a base throughout all of their power.

Στο γραφικότατο Φανάρι, χωριό του νομού Καρδίτσας βρίσκεται το Βυζαντινό Κάστρο Φαναρίου. Κτισμένο το 13ο αιώνα σε θέση μεγάλης αμυντικής σημασίας και στο πέρασμα από Τρίκαλα για Άρτα. Tο κάστρο εξυπηρέτησε τόσο τους ντόπιους αλλά και τους κατακτητές. Μέχρι το 15ο αιώνα η χρήση του ήταν αποκλειστικά στρατιωτική, ενώ από το 15ο αιώνα και μετά αποτελεί έδρα της επισκοπής.

Το μέγεθος του είναι μικρό, μόλις 2,6 στρέμματα και το πάχος του τείχους είναι 2 μέτρα. Μέσα στο κάστρο συναντάμε ένα καμαροσκέπαστο κτίριο που εξυπηρετούσε ως πυριτιδαποθήκη, τα ερείπια ενός τζαμιού το οποίο είναι χτισμένο πάνω σε ένα χώρο που βρισκόταν το λουτρό και μία μεγάλη δεξαμενή συλλογής βρόχινου νερού.
