My basic understanding of this is that when you duplicate, you are effectively taking a snapshot of the original is at that particular moment in time. With reference, you can continue making changes to the original query, and these will cascade to the reference table. The same is true of the connection itself, at the point you duplicate, they become separate queries to Excel/SQL/AZ/etc., whereas with reference you are still only making the one query. It might even be the case that the data is only stored once, but I'll experiment first.

Thanks for highlighting this, it is going to be extremely useful for me as I have a large build where we need to pull category sales from the source query, but then merge another dataset to it and create a customised hierarchy for our own company's products.

Question related to source file change: I took a pbix file from my collegue and when I went to power query, all the tables were throwing error. This was bcz the source excel file path was pointing to the excel present in his system. Just by changing the source file path the tables were not working . They were throwing error like parsing error, year column could not found. I can only achieve this by removing the applied steps to all individual table. So it was like new table without error. Can you please tell me how we can overcome this issue. I don't want to import the excel again and don't want to perform any transformation every tym I change the source file

Hi AWN, I have a question for you, after duplicating and referencing our Fact table, if we refresh Fact table on daily basis, whether the duplicated table gets updated daily or not? Because the duplicated table is an independent table now and its not pointing to the fact table.

Is there a way to stop the refresh of data in the duplicated table? For example let's say I duplicate a table to keep as an archive. Is there a way to keep the data static in that duplicated table to where data will not update during a refresh of the original table ?
