I lived near a large fishing river as a child but where I lived there were a lot of backwashes into ponds and little creeks. There were always otters hanging out by the river waiting for salmon and stuff. They were always super friendly and showoffs. I remember when I was like 7 years old and I was wading through some water and one swam right by my legs. Thought it was the coolest thing ever.

Watching this footage is *almost* as thrilling as seeing the real thing. I'm including this video in a Nevada County (California) watershed blog post about North American River Otters (scheduled for publishing around Dec. 21st, 2020) I've heard rumors of neighbors seeing them occasionally and there are a few iNaturalist observations noted within twenty miles, but there is little community-wide knowledge of these charismatic animals living in the area. I hope your imagery and my writing encourages more folks in the western states to become otter spotters and conservation effort contributors.
