Why Beekeepers Break Up Bee Fights

Ever wondered why beekeepers mess around with hives?
They’re not just poking bees for fun—they’re preventing full-blown bee wars! 🐝⚔️

When bees feel stressed, they prepare backup queens in case their current queen dies.
But if a new queen hatches while the old one’s still alive, the hive splits into rival factions.
These aren’t just harmless squabbles—one side will kill the other queen or leave the hive altogether.
It’s war until only one queen remains.

That’s why beekeepers step in fast—either removing extra queen cells or storing new queens safely in a "queen bank."

For humans, it’s just farming practice but to bees, it’s divine intervention.

Aborting potential claimants to the throne is crazy work. Cercei would be proud.

I’m just imagining a bunch of bees in armor with banners depicting the new queen as they march into battle for the throne.
And then a giant hand comes down and snatches the new queen and the bee soldiers just join the old one again.

It’s called “swarming” and it happens more often than we think, the queen usually finds these queen cells herself and destroys it. But yes it’s beneficial to destroy any queen cells while you see them, but the fact there are any at all may mean something is wrong with the queen, and the hive may need closer inspection

I use to help my neighbor with his bees. We had to replace a queen because the old one wasnt making enough babys to survive the winter, however we couldn't find her. So we said screw it and placed the new queen in there and low and behold we think they all liked her cause she was making alot of new babies. The real kicker there wasn't a civil war as illustrated in this video, im not saying they dont happen, i genuinely believe they all hated her and went gave her the marie Antoinette treatment.

Another risk multiple queens pose is that, oftentimes, a new queen may change a hive's behavior. Some hives will turn aggressive. I saw a video once where one beekeeper had an aggressive hive. He attempted replacing the queen several times, but they killed the new queen. It got so bad that he had to make the tough decision to euthanize the whole hive.
