As a Thai, I can tell you that this recipe is legit. but, as she said, you're supposed to put the green papaya and everything into the mortar and pestle and smash it all together. Also we usually recommend you to use dried mini shrimps if you do not have shrimp paste.

Shrimp paste? No, we, Thais, don’t use shrimp paste on Green Papaya Salad. We use Pla Rah (ปลาร้า) which is fermented small fish if we want our Green Papaya Salad to be stronger in odor and taste. We, Thais, don’t mix cilantro into the mix. Cilantro is a garnish. Also, topping some roasted peanuts is not your twist, neither adding boiled shrimp. We also use clay mortar or wooden mortar to keep the Green Papaya Salad from being mushy.
