In this video, we dive into Asteroid 2024 PT5, Earth’s upcoming mini-moon, set to orbit between September and November 2024.
Earth is getting a second moon as a small asteroid, named 2024 PT5, hurtles toward our planet at a staggering speed of about 3,500 km per hour. Soon, this 33-foot-long celestial body will temporarily become Earth’s second moon. However, it poses no threat to our planet. While an asteroid of this size could cause catastrophic damage if it were to impact Earth, 2024 PT5 will remain at a safe distance, orbiting at roughly the same distance as the moon. According to NASA, this space rock is expected to enter Earth’s orbit from September 29 to November 25, completing one orbit every 53 days before drifting back into space. Scientists believe it belongs to the Arjuna Group, a collection of small asteroids with orbits similar to Earth’s that remain stable and don’t stray far from our planet’s path. Interestingly, this isn't the first time a mini-moon has visited Earth—2022 NX1 followed a similar path in 2022. Finally, if you enjoyed this video, don’t forget to subscribe and stay updated on the latest space news and discoveries. Thanks for watching!
