Ήταν η στολή προστασίας των γιατρών που θεράπευαν την πανούκλα από τον 14ο μέχρι και τον 17ο αιώνα.
Even for the Venice carnival, which is considered to be the most "serious" and "strict"
in the world, this figure is awe and worry, not unfair,
as it reminds a black bird. However, her story is even darker.
The figure of "Dottore" does not belong to a Venetian carnival nor was used
to scare small children. It was the uniform for the protection of doctors who treated the plague from the 14th
until the 17th century.
Each piece of the suit was protecting the doctor from the disease that destroyed 1/3 of the continent's population,
although it later turned out to be likely to increase the chances of spreading the disease because it was infected
fabrics.
The mask, which was also the hallmark of the cholera therapists, was a bird.
On her beak
masks placed aromatic herbs such as mint, carnation, myrrh, rose petals and labdanum.
The world then believed that the disease was transported by air and the mask was used to protect the doctor. One of the doctors' theories was that the disease came from the birds and if she wore the mask,
the infection would be transferred to the clothes and would not touch him.
The clothes were leather, wax-coated, and there was no centimeter of skin uncovered and unprotected.
Their eyes were protected by glasses with red lenses and on the head,
except for the mask, they also wore the characteristic wide hat.
It was the hat worn by all the doctors of the time to stand out from ordinary citizens.
They had always with him a walking stick, which they used to look at the patients,
without touching them.
One of the uses of the stick was to beat the patient for punishment, as they believed
plague hurt him because of his sins.
Many of the doctors who treated the plague were actually Cobonganites,
who were presenting the experts to get the big pay that the dangerous
their occupation. They were hired by the whole city and not by any individual,
so doctors had to deal with the lower social strata, acting as a kind
social security of the 14th century.
Of course, they often did not offer anything to the patient because they did not have the necessary knowledge.
There was a case of a doctor who a few days before wearing the protective suit worked as a grocer
and he did not even know writing and reading.
