Belt replacement for early Volvo 240 models (‘76-‘84)

This is a short video on how to replace the accessory belts (alternator/water pump dual belts, York AC compressor belt, and Saginaw power steering pump belt) on a early model 240 with the B21 or B23 (‘76-‘84 redblocks). Most of the process is pretty straightforward but there is a strange tension system for the AC belt. The repair was performed on our 1975 Volvo 242 project that I swapped a ‘84 B23 and M46 into

Tools needed are:
Ratchet
Phillips screwdriver or Torx
10mm wrench
13mm wrench
10mm 6 point socket
22mm 6 point deep socket

I was looking at this ac compressor for 20 minutes wonder where the hell the tensioner was, thanks!

The AC pulley tensioning setup will be familiar to air cooled VW guys. Everyone else now has this clear, simply-explained video to help them understand.
This is really good. Accessible information like this helps keep a lot of bricks on the road instead of cubed and melted.

Thanks for explaining. I never understood the purpose of the multi piece crank pulleys on the early cars until now.

Thank you for the video. Strange there's no video for later model 240's. I'm having a hell of a time but this video I think will help.

Thank you for your helpful video. I have an 86’ 245.... the belt configuration is the same but has tensioners on the power steering pump and a/c . There were some differences on the 86’ but your video was a useful guide and I was able to change all 4 belts successfully. I appreciate how you are able to make a clear video, articulate the process simply, work on your car, and most importantly communicate with your kids in a patient loving way while you’re doing it. Much respect. Thanks again.

Those engines are easy to work on, compared to the later engines of the 240

This probably sounds dumb, but when installing the ac belt do you sandwich the belt between the two plates and install is as a single pulley, or do you put the back plate on, spacers, belt and bolt the top plate over it?

Is there any timing that I need to watch out for?

The part where the belt goes on, do you clean it, it looks like it has surface rust,

At 11:28, how did you get the belt on far enough to the point you could turn it and snap it on? I tried doing that and I ended up breaking my belt a little bit :(
Life saving video though, thank you so much for posting!
