Robert Woodrow Wilson: Tuning in to the Big Bang

When astronomer Robert Woodrow Wilson and physicist Arno Allan Penzias were testing a new type of antenna, they hardly expected their work would lead to some of the most important discoveries of modern cosmology. What started as annoying noise in their measurements turned out to be the background hum of the early Universe.

I'm glad the old antenna is still there. I hope they keep it around just for nostalgia, even if it's no longer being used. I used to see lots of parabolic horn antennas like that mounted vertically on towers for the telephone system, but they all seem to have disappeared now. I guess fiber optics have taken over from microwave for that purpose?
