Can Doctors Get DRAFTED Into the Military?

Russia has invaded Ukraine and many people - including doctors and other healthcare workers - are worried about the possibility of a draft should things escalate to a global scale. If you’re a nurse, resident, doctor, or another healthcare worker, should you be worried? How likely is a medical draft? And if one were to occur, what would it look like?

Most people have heard of the Selective Services System and know that young men in the United States, age 18 to 25, are required to sign up. What many people aren’t aware of, however, is that the US has standby plans developed by the Selective Service System to draft doctors, nurses, and other medical technicians into the military in the event of a national crisis. It is called the Health Care Personnel Delivery System, or HCPDS for short.

We'll cover everything you need to know about the HCPDS as well as how likely a medical draft is to occur in the US. Make sure you stick around to the end because we'll also cover the likelihood of a medical draft in other countries including the UK, Canada, and India.

In singapore, as long as you're a male doctor, you're automatically a reserve military doctor and you'd have to serve 2 years as a full time military doc(mandatory) after medical school followed by 1-3 weeks of reserve training and service per year for the next 10 years. All male doctors in singapore are military doctors.

Fun Fact from a military reservist: If you’re a doctor as a civilian but work as something completely different in the military, the military cannot force you to work as a doctor in the military. In fact, the military is not allowed to use your civilian qualifications at all, unless you specifically give them permission. I remember one of my leaders talking about one of his buddies, he was a surgeon in the civilian side but worked as a Master Chief Seabee(construction job) in military. If he were to be deployed, the Department of Defense cannot force him to work as a surgeon. He has to agree to those terms, otherwise he’ll be doing construction job while in uniform and that’s what he actually preferred.

Great video! I find it shocking the amount of money the federal government is willing to pay in entitlement programs and welfare yet they won’t give adequate funding to military doctors pay. It’s absolutely criminal that doctors that want to sacrifice and serve the country must also accept the fact they are going to be paid 1/4-1/2 of what civilian counterparts make. This is one of the few areas in government where if you increased spending, you’d actually see decent results. Not to mention the potential increased cost of if they had to draft civilian docs that make substantially more and run their own practice. The government is on the hook financially for those physicians loss of pay difference and keeping their practice from collapsing.

Because of the developing oversupply of ER doctors, Navy and Air Force do not have ANY need at this time for EM physicians. The Army has some need, but not much. I'm older (52) and tried to waver in with no luck. :-(

You would think with its military budget so large, they would pay more and compete with its competitors but that's a discussion for another day.... maybe.
