Have you ever wondered what kind of dangerous #bacteria or #parasites live in your mouth? There are more than you might think!

Board Certified Periodontist Dr. Joseph Nemeth goes over the 5 pathogens that we see in the mouth of those that have gum disease.
Now one may think "I don't have gum disease!" ... Not so fast.

A recent study conducted by the CDC suggests that 47.2% of adults aged 30 years and older have some form of #periodontaldisease.
Also, Periodontal Disease increases with age, 70.1% of adults 65 years and older have periodontal disease.

Just remember, bleeding or swollen gums are never normal! Your gums will only bleed if they are not healthy or have an infection. Now, the infection may be milid, or it may be severe, but even slightly infected gum tissue will be infested with at least some of these parasites or bacteria.

Let's go over the 5 most dangerous pathogens in the mouth:

First, we see Spinning Rods.
This is generally the first type of bacteria that forms in periodontal disease otherwise known as gum disease and they are fairly aggressive.

Second, we find Gliding Rods.
These are a more advanced form of the Spinning Rods. They look fairly similar but the gliding rods are a bit longer in length, they do not spin as much and they move around much more.

Third, we will notice Spirochetes.
These are most commonly found in high numbers with much more severe cases of periodontitis. These dental spirochetes are now being found in the brains of Alzheimer's patients in much higher numbers than those without Alzheimer's Disease.

If you'd like to learn more about the potential Alzheimers/Perio connection see the sources below.

Fourth, we will find Amoeba.
Some of you may have heard of the Amoeba before, and this is certainly not a good pathogen to have in your mouth.
These Amoeba move very slowly, (The footage in this video is sped up 3X) and they use their pseudopods to ingulf the white blood cells that are in the mouth trying to fight the disease.

Fifth, we have the Trichomonads
These are the least common bacteria that we find in the mouth, however they are the most destructive. These parasites are extremely mobile and are usually only seen in the very extreme advanced cases of gum disease. These Trichomonads are the same bacteria that are found in the STD known as trichomoniasis. However they are not the same species of 'trich'. Therefore, the Trichomonads from the mouth cannot be directly passed into trichomoniasis.

Make sure you keep your mouth healthy because it can affect your entire body! These bacteria have been linked to so many other systemic diseases. Don't forget to floss.

That was bitterly informative! I'm totally shocked and have a long Wikipedia study date ahead for myself, lol! I've never heard of those pathogens before and even the names are scary. Thank you for all your work as a social media medical educator. Best wishes in all your work.

What a fantastic teaching tool you have there, with the microscope, slides of living organisms, and a wide screen monitor! This should be required viewing in any new-patient evaluation as well as in every high school level health course. I became a dental hygienist in 1969-- in those long-ago days, we were literally operating in the dark. We knew who had ongoing disease, and we knew how to treat it (more or less) but we never saw evidence of it as you can with these more modern day tools. Thanks for sharing.

It’s really good proof of terrain theory versus germ theory. Those organisms are not causing the gum issues, instead they are opportunistically inhabiting terrain where they can survive and multiply. The condition of the terrain is indicative of the fluidity of the lymphatic system throughout the body. Therefore, anyone presenting these organisms and issues is definitely dealing with greater systemic lymphatic congestion and the various symptoms and issues that arise from it. Their general health should be addressed at the same time. There should be Holistic Periodontists.

Great video Doctor Nemeth. Informative videos like this one have me loving youtube. Years ago a dentist stressed the importance of dental health to my dad and he passed on the tips to me. I am thankful I have a healthy mouth at 67. I use mouthwash often to get after these along with brushing and flossing.

Thx for the great video 👍. A dentist named David Kennedy has a similar video showing the gum disease bugs under a microscope. He recommended using a water pick w/iodine in it to kill the bugs. I’ve also seen people say that you shouldn’t use H Peroxide if you have amalgam fillings? What are your thoughts on iodine?

2:52 How can you make the environment not conducive to causing infection if someone has deep pockets? I heard that deep pockets don't reverse like mere inflammation does. Is that true? What can you do to make the environment not conducive? Thank you.

What is wrong with the immune system that it doesn't fight off the bacteria you listed? Is it a sign of the person being prediabetic?
