Socialized or Civilized?

Homeschooled Children don't need to be socialized, but they do need to be civilized. Let's explore the differences and suggest some ways homeschoolers can represent themselves better to others.

Another homeschooler was talking about ‘stranger safety’ with her kindergartner. I had never had that talk with my kiddo because we live in a very very small town and she’s always with people she knows. But I knew I had messed up when she said she would go with a stranger if they said they needed help ‘finding a lost dog’. Amazing some of the things we don’t think to teach our kids!

I hope many hear this message because it is beneficial. Having a "who cares about what others think" isn't a highly thinking attitude. I do want others who don't understand homeschooling to have a reason to think more highly of homeschooled families. Teaching these courtesies will benefit the hearer and our children.

My son is homeschooled but extremely shy and struggles to even make eye contact. He can say hello now but that is it. I just make him miserable when i try and push him to say more. I was the same as a child and alot of it has to do with wether kids feel safe around adults. That being said, I take into acccount my child is an introvert and might not have anything to say. Personal opinion, people play social games of niceness and I dont trust it. But I agree with the video and appreciate the Biblical perspective

Sherry, this video’s topic was so helpful. Very practical but very encouraging. If we want our families to represent Christ well in the community and the world, civility is so important. Even having your kids know a grade to say (just for general context) is a way to be all things to all people like Paul talks about in 1 Corinthians. We won’t do the homeschool community as a whole any good if we don’t represent the best of the benefits of it. ❤ I’m so grateful for the wisdom you share here.

This is not just a homeschooler issue. My kids have had public school friends over who were completely uncivilized. They had no idea what was inappropriate behavior when visiting someone else's home.
