Who’s poor in India, according to the government? Anyone who lives in a city and earns more than 32 rupees – or less than half a U.S. dollar – a day is above the poverty line. For those who live in a village, the benchmark is 26 rupees a day. In other words, you may go broke after buying a litre of milk a day, but you are not “poor.”

The video above explains the basis on which the Indian government arrived at this conclusion.

In us the poverty line is at 1000$ per month which is huge the dont just want the poor to have roti kapda (not makan) but to have a basic sustainable lifestyle
the poverty line must be at 5500 per month per capita ( for a family of 4 thats about 22000 per month )
rent 2000 per month
food- 500 per month
education-1500 per month
health -1000 per month
clothing-300 per month
other expenses - 200 per month
