preview_player

Jazz has strong roots in the UK, having been brought here in 1919 by an all-black band called the Southern Syncopated Orchestra.

Sky's Shamaan Freeman-Powell looks at how the band's visit to the UK helped pave the way for generations to come.

An awful lot of people get prickly over this. Its nothing new that cultures pick and mix different influences and create new genres of art or music. There's always been cultural exchange.

If races don't exist ( there is only the human race) then why we have to celebrate something that doesn't exist?

Jazz is African-American music. Let that be known.

Jazz isn't very catchy toe tapping though compared with;
"Camptown Races" sung by Al Jolson
Even Foghorn Leghorn would sing the tune.

The Southern Syncopated Orchestra seems to be in the process of becoming the "Cleopatra" of jazz (ref. the disputed Netflix series). I've seen the claim, that they were the first to bring jazz to Britain, in a large amount of publications, in connection with Black History Week. It seems quite ridiculous that somebody wants to build a black history based on lies, stealing the history of others, rather than describing one's own. I find it quite serious, as most people will have no way of knowing that they are being lied to, and that the history of a band that has such an enormous impact on the history of music as The Original Dixieland Jazz Band is being denied.
