How do totalitarian regimes emerge? What makes regular citizens report their relatives and neighbours to authorities?

Professor of Clinical Psychology at Ghent University and author of “The Psychology of Totalitarianism” Mattias Desmet joins The Rupa Supramanya Show to discuss Mass Formation Psychosis, a phenomenon deeply rooted in group psychology where intolerance towards dissident voices and allegiance to ideology are seen as an ethical duty in affected societies.

Mattias and Rupa talk about instances of Mass Formation Psychosis occurring even before the Covid-19 pandemic, such as during the Iranian Revolution and in the Soviet Union.

Lastly, Mattias shares his thoughts on how this psychosis can have a lasting effect on the culture for years.

Tune into The Rupa Subramanya Show on True North.

Rupa, you are a Cdn hero. I've watched so many podcasts with Mattias - He gave me hope 2 years ago, when he first spoke (or, I first heard him speak) on mass formation....It was a time when I thought I was going out of my mind, with the BLINDNESS of family and friends to see there was something not right going on. So grateful for his insights and for you, Rupa, speaking truth against the disturbing mainstream lies.

Rupa has a special talent for sourcing out the best minds to try and explain the unraveling of rational thinking in so many countries. Matthias has given one of the clearest explanations that I’ve heard about this mass psychosis that we are experiencing. It was like all the planets aligned to cause this madness. I saw so much correlation between the WEF and what the Liberal government was doing as well. I am grateful for Rupa and Matthias in helping to bring some sense to what does not make sense.

'Mass Formation Psychosis' . The title is intriguing.
It reminds me of a quote from Theo Fleury while on Fox News about 14 months ago: "Our PM has Vaccine Derangement Syndrome."

In March 2022 we drove around Regina, SK with the words MASS FORMATION Psychosis written on the back window of our truck. We didn't get our window broken at least. We just hoped to get people thinking about what had been and was going on. Thanks for the interview.

Mattias Desmet references Hannah Arendt frequently in this interview and apparently, from reviews I read, also does so in his book. Richard Pipes, in his book “Russia under the Bolshevik Regime” notes that Arendt was one of a group of German scholars, which also included Carl Friedrich, who wrote almost all the early books on totalitarianism, and drew excessively on their own national experience. Hannah Arendt, in particular, emphasized Anti-Semitism as a component of totalitarianism, looking at Nazism and Fascism, and ignoring Soviet Communism. She actually seemed to believe that Lenin, the father of one-party rule in the Soviet Union was bent on giving to all power to the Soviets, and his plans were scuttled by Joseph Stalin. Pipes writes: “Totalitarian regimes formulate and impose systems of ideas which purport to provide answers to all questions of private and public life. Secular ideologies of this kind, enforced by Party-controlled schools and media, are an historical innovation introduced by the Bolsheviks and emulated by the Fascists and Nazis.” Desmet doesn’t seem to acknowledge the Bolshevik origin of this innovation any more than Arendt did. The good news, according to Pipes, is that when dictators disappear from the scene, their ideas usually die with them. Even if Justin Trudeau succeeds in stamping out dissenting voices with his increasingly dictatorial legislation, when he is gone, no-one is going to believe in a supply-chain-bottleneck theory of inflation.
