"x 1" is the number of times something exists.

Simple point. You don't multiply an apple with another apple, you multiply an apple with a number.

If you multiply $1 x $1, you'd get 1 dollar squared, which doesn't mean anything. Similarly, 2 apples x 3 apples = 6 apples^2. These aren't meaningful unit but the key here is the fundamental concept of a unit versus a scalar.

For example, (1 x 10) pens means you have one set of ten pens. Conversely, (0 x 10) pens means you have zero sets of ten pens.

A better way to explain for yall would be
"Multiplying 2 apples by three apples would be 6 squared apples (the same way multiplying 4 inches by 3 inches goes from measuring a line to a square which would be measured in squared inches which is a different unit), but since we dont have squared apples you cant make that measurement in real life, so you would multiply 2 apples by 3 (with no units) to get 3 times the apples you started with (since thats what multiplication is) the same way 2 times 2 is 4, the only difference here is one number has a unit (the apples) and the other does not because you arent looking for squared apples, youre looking for multiples of apples"

Yeah then it's 1 dollar^2, which doesn't mean anything, but then again you multiplied a physical object BY a physical object, which only works when one of the physical objects refer to abstract measurements of the real world. This has to do with meaning, and not math. Math is universal in so far as it gives us insight into the physical world, but it requires us use it in provable ways.
All Terrence did was prove that 1$$ is not real, not that math itself was wrong.

If you're multiplying two apples by three apples, it sounds like you're just adding them together. Three sets or groups of two apples is what multiplication looks like. One group or set of $1 will always be $1.

1 apple multiplied by 3 apples is 4 apples. When you multiply by numbers it grows times the number. When you multiply by objects it grows plus the object. 2 apples times 4 oranges is 2 apples plus 4 oranges.
