What are your tips for finding a great stylist??

The challenge I have found is the stylist is either good in color OR cutting the hair. Hard to find one that does both.

July 2021: My hair was way past my shoulders and quite gray as it had not been cut or dyed since November 2019. I was working nearly 24/7 and was very depressed about my looks. I've been to the "hairstylist to the stars" which was expensive ($500 plus tips) and had to switch to another salon that was less expensive. My new hairstylist did a nice job but I felt tired of the same old cut and style. I knew if I called it would be more of the same. So I googled. I'm vegan and had started using Aveda during the pandemic because I could order online. So, when I saw an Aveda salon not far from me, I took a deep breath and called. The receptionist asked a lot of questions and then invited me to come in after work (it happened to be their late day). I was so nervous. The stylist sat me down in the chair and asked me what I liked and didn't like about my hair. I mentioned one or two things and then she gave me some ideas of what would work with my type of hair. Turns out there were a dozen options. She could even take out the reddish-brown color that was still on half my head. I figured what the hell. I emerged over 3 hours later with the biggest smile on my face. It's the best thing I've ever done! I always hated my gray roots but also hated getting it colored every 5 weeks! She talked me into trying highlights and blending in the gray so I'm closer to an ashy look and can wait as long as I want before doing it again! After 8 months it still worked! Also, I told her I wanted it long enough to put it up but not so long that it dragged my face down. Presto! She did that too! I was there a few weeks ago for just a cut etc and after the blow out she thought I needed a bit more layering. She asked how I felt about it and I agreed (I had been thinking it needed something). So she took out her magic scissors and after a few minutes she was as excited as I was. I guess what I want to say is that sometimes your hairstylist gets used to coloring and/or cutting your hair a certain way and they aren't able to hear you when you ask about a different color or shape. I loved my previous hairstylist but I asked once about a lighter color and she said I wouldn't like it. And I continuously begged for my hair to be long enough for a ponytail but she always cut it in same short blunt bob. I probably would still be going there if it hadn't been for the pandemic. I think if you are still wearing the same style for ten years, and you are no longer excited about it when you leave the salon, it may be time to move on. I think my new stylist has a better understanding of that and I trust her skills enough that when I do get tired of this style she will hear me and maybe have some ideas for me to think about.

Justin, I will say that for me, I never had anyone use texturizing or thinning shears on my hair ever until 2020 when my hair got butchered with them. Then, after that, it happened 3 more times with different people!! Before that, it was your cutting with point cut and that is what works for me. If anyone uses thinning shear technique on me, it is disastrous so yes, I do tell them not to use them now, ever. My hair does well with the right elevation, cut, point cut it, and that's it.

I have fine hair and had a hard time finding a stylist in Toronto that would give me what I want. I have tried a few, spending up to over $300 (over 10 years ago). After a while, I gave up and decided to keep in doing the 6-hour drive to Montréal every 6 to 10 weeks to see the stylist I have been seeing since 1996. Needless to say, she is not allowed to retire. 😁 Shout out to Lucy! You're the best.
Don't get me wrong, I am not saying there are no good stylist in Toronto, just that I haven't had any luck, and my stylist in Montréal is worth the drive.

I have been going to the same hairstylist for about 20 yrs....followed her even when she moved to different towns a fair distance from me....because she cut my hair well. However ...since she started doing hair for many old age home ladies and I have aged too she has changed technique and has messed up my last hair cut !!!! Beware....even hairstylists can get stuck in a rut of the style they do the most! Now I have to grow out the mess and start again. Just thought this information would also help in your videos. Wish I lived near you ....I'm not even in the same country...I live in Johannesburg south Africa. Absolutely love your videos😊😊😊

No one has mentioned this tip yet. If you see someone with similar texture hair as yours and you love her hair, ask her where and who does her hair. She won’t mind at all because you’ve just complimented her!

I have never found a stylist who can cut my thick, coarse, short hair, so I stopped looking. For years I've been cutting it myself and it looks bad - but not any worse than it did when a stylist scalped me. I hope your list has a stylist who works with mature women who don't want to look like an old shoe, but also don't care to look like their granddaughter. Thanks for what you do.

Great content, Justin! My secret to finding a stylist is to find one with similar textured hair. I have ultra thick, wavy hair and my best stylists had similar hair... My daughter had a traumatic head injury and couldn't drive for 2 years. So I drove her for her hair cuts and got to watch my stylist cut and color hair while I waited... That told me everything I needed to know! Now her stylist has been mine too for about 7 years.

Great video and great view! According to my husband I am never happy with my hair or hair stylist but I'm too afraid of going somewhere else for fear of disaster. With your tips, I'm going to branch out and try to find someone new. 🤞🤞🤞

*Perfect* timing! 👏🏻 I got a _bad_ haircut last month at a salon I've been going to the last 6-8 months. It's a place that specializes in curly cuts (I have wavy/2a/2b gray hair) and the stylist (who I had been to 3-4 times) did exactly what I asked her not to do. I showed her a video (just a short clip) of the cut that I wanted and the stylist in the video said, basically, it was a one-layer, blunt cut with very light graduation/beveling and very short face-framing in the front. My stylist said I would end up with a a _mushroom_ as it grew out and would need to make some adjustments. We talked about length & I told her I wanted either just above or just sweeping my shoulders. I then said I don't want it *here* (motioning to my jaw/chin area). What I got was short, choppy, chunky layers, just below my jaw line. 😐 The only thing I can do is wait for it to grow and I've been searching the internet for salons near me for a couple weeks now. That said, I signed up for your emails and I'm so excited that you actually list a salon in my city! Yay! 👏🏻 Thank SO much! ❤ Love seeing the dog-babies! 🐾

Thank you! Can’t wait for the list! As a former hairstylist I have had bad & good experiences with high end and cheaper places

Hi Justin! I have extremely long wavy frizzy thick hair. I hate to wear it Curley needless to say. I have to blow it out and flat iron it many times to ensure I get all the waves out. To see you do this while adding body to the hair would be awesome.

I know you said it’s not the tool but the tool in the hand of the stylist but what if you went to many “high end” stylists and that tool/technique always resulted in your hair splitting quickly? I have virgin 3A hair (frizzy and fragile) that always splits after a stylist takes a razor or splices my front layers w/the edge of a scissor (you know when they run the blade down to get the front angle). So I tell all stylists to only take clean cuts w/scissors. It took me a year of wondering why I was getting split ends even though I got regular trims and don’t color my hair. I may be missing out on some cool effect w/razors or texturizing shears, but the health of my hair matters more.

Great tips! Another thing I’ve done is to schedule another service such as having my roots colored so I can get to know the stylist and see how we interact before they get near my head with scissors!
