I work in OBGYN. Anytime the providers are running late, I blame it on a “naughty baby” and ladies are usually pretty understanding.

My doctor ran more than an hour late and I later figured out (not through HIPAA violations) that it was because he told his patient she had cancer and had four months to live. He waited with her while her husband drove to the office from work to break the news to him when he got there. I vowed then to never complain when my doctor is late to see me.

If my Dr is running late her team is always very accommodating. It rarely happens, and they are always deeply appreciative of the patience required by the patients. Rooms can get pretty toxic real quick.

I never get upset when my doctor is running late. I know it usually means that they’ve spent extra time with a patient who needed it.

Sometimes that person they’ve spent extra time with has been me.

So when it’s not me, I do my best to wait patiently.

I always feel like the front desk double books appointments and usually they’re only given in 15-30 min intervals. That doesn’t make sense. There should be more time in each slot to allow for more focused care and also for the doctor to not be overwhelmed. The problem is that the system and insurance requires they see an impossible amount of patients in a day in order to keep the practice and make enough money. Not a good model but this is why there are efforts to fix the system.

As a patient, if you are running an hour late give your patients the option to reschedule. Not everyone has time in thier day for that extra hour especialky those of us paying for child / elder care and have limited time.

I was one of the patients that made my obgyn late to her other appointments. I needed a c section . So I’ll never complain.

I have 2 cardiac kids, one with DS. I will wait for 3 hours for a doctor, idc. I just get annoyed when nobody TELLS you like “hey it’s gonna be a minute, the doc had an emergency”
I spend dozens of hours a year just waiting. 😂 for a 9 min appt.

I don’t see many doctors but my obgyn was always late but it never bothered me because I knew her job was important, she is
amazing at her job so I just patiently waited my turn. ❤

I’m happy to break the news to patients over the phone if possible whenever their appt has to be moved due to the provider being called to an emergent procedure. I’m just the operator so I don’t always know when a provider gets called away but if the patient happens to call and I’m aware I’ll go ahead and tell them and listen to their concerns if they have any. It usually helps soften the blow and smooth things over so they don’t come into the office only to find out and have a full meltdown at the check in window. Plus patients get a min to process the situation before the medical assistant calls to get them rescheduled which saves them from shouldering the brunt of situation alone. Gotta spread the love 😉

My surgeon's office was entertaining enough on its own (he did reconstruction surgery, mine was covered by my medical insurance, so I went to his private office). You walked in & the patient waiting room consisted of an antique church pew from the 50s pushed on one wall, the large antique 14-seater dining table with the mismatched collection of antique chairs assorted around said table, a classic upright piano with a skeleton dressed in a scarf seated at the bench, a bust of George Washington on top of said piano, African folk art from various countries scattered about, various Asian folk art from different countries scattered about... he also wore suspenders and a bow tie under his doctor's coat during our appointments. Sometimes I feel I dreamt him up 🤣 he did absolutely wonderful work, though, he touched up an older scar that wasn't part of what I was seeing him for, for free, then did the follow-up revision surgery for free as well. Plus it healed wonderfully and fairly quickly. He did amazing work, plus his oddity was wonderfully endearing 🤣

I recently had an appointment where the NP was running over an hour behind and when I met with her I told her at the end "you got this." I knew she was stressed. She told me she really needed to hear that.

There is a board at my OB's office. Green, yellow, red. It let's me know if I should sit down, go pee or go get a coffee 😅

I prefer you tell me the truth about the time wait, then a random "soon". If you know you're an hour behind, just say so. We might have to figure out different childcare arrangements or reschedule other things in our own day.

Often I have been that patient. By the hour mark I get a little worried but as long as my phone is charged, never impatient. In the ER it can take until around the 8 hour mark.
