Not sure about if its said before in comments, but the reason why the upgrade for the rook is "dragon" may be because in the related board game shogi, the promoted rook is named dragon and behaves a bit like that

Simon Says is you have to move to the same color the opponent did. It doesn't just pick whatever color it wants.

The reason the king capture is so prevalent in chess variants is cause it's easier to implement than checking all possible mechanics for checks

Edit: but there are checks anyway so idk
