Benjamin Kalivas, M.D., is an assistant professor in the departments of Medicine and Psychiatry. He completed his residency in both specialties and is board certified in both specialties. His clinical role in the Department of Medicine is as an Academic Hospitalist. Within the Department of Psychiatry he is part of the Brain Stimulation team where he treats patients with treatment resistant mental illness utilizing tools such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Kalivas has served as the program director for the Combined Internal Medicine and Psychiatry residency program since 2000. He is active in resident and student education in both departments. Dr. Kalivas also work with the Department of Quality as the Medical Director of Graduate Medical Education (GME) Quality and Safety, where he facilitates the implementation of quality improvement and a culture of safety to the 800 residents and fellows working at MUSC.
Lastly, Dr. Kalivas actively does research on delirium, a dangerous neuropsychiatric syndrome associated with acute medical illness. He works at implementing best practice as well as studying how delirium impacts patients at MUSC.
