The Efficient design of a building can seem like a balance between safety and design efficiency. However, efficient structural design doesn't need to trade structural safety. the rise of computational structural mechanics has brought a new way structures can be designed, allowing for efficient structural framing while improving safety in design.

This new paradigm in structural design isn't new, as it was always possible, tho it was time-consuming. Also, had an increase in risk due to human-induced errors. But, the rise of Structural engineering merging with programming eliminates these concerns through a systematic approach to design.

By merging python programming and structural engineering, you are not only able to make a safer design but also reduce the time it takes to reduce your structural design. This allows you to spend time on areas that require more attention.

Do Engineers use maths on a regular basis? And do you need to be good at maths to be a structural engineer? I go through the maths that I use on a daily basis to do my structural design.

However, the maths engineers use is not just physical calculations but also understanding structural mechanics and mathematical theory. We also use rules of thumb to assess complex structural behaviour. Engineering does use a lot of complex maths, tho you may not use it daily. Despite not using a lot of math, you do need a solid understanding of mathematics as you need to have a deeper understanding of structural behaviour.

You should have discussed health monitoring. By being able to actively monitor a building's health, structural engineers can more comfortably avoid the temptation to overengineer structures. Furthermore, insurance companies might offer lower premiums if they are given the ability to monitor the health of buildings they have insured.

As I presume you know, modern steel buildings, built by competent engineers and builders almost never simply collapse out of the blue. Rather, they tend to die slow deaths, at least in part, because they are not properly maintained. "Build it and forget it" is absurd, yet all too common.

Have you come across reinforced Hebel as a loadbearing wall solution (carrying a suspended concrete roof) in residential or multi-res? We have a partially complete building that we've been asked to help 'solve' the problem of. Presumably, it has been designed to AS5146 but the builders don't want to touch it. Is it a 'thing' down there?

Hi Brendan! You have shown nonlinear beam analysis from research report of Wolansky, I have calculated that beam in Midas FEA, and must say, that he didn't take into account self weigt of beam and his results are not entirely correct.

Hi, good video. I've a question, for what I understand, you made different models in ETABS removing elements, then export the results and with phyton you get the structural element which removed produce the most increment in the internal forces and deformation.? How many models yo did?
