Late on the evening of 9/1/2009, the start button was hit on ex-Eastman Kodak Company ALCO RS-1 #9 after several hours of work to prep the engine for startup and after a two year hibernation from the engine's last operation. Shot from inside the cab looking down the top of the long hood with the videographer's hand ont the start button, the ALCO 539 roars to life after only a few revolutions of the engine.

That is just awesome. Thanks for sharing a little behind the scenes! I love seeing all this stuff, so feel free to post as many videos as you have time! : )

There are on board systems for some engines. In the case of #9, we have a ~3 gallon oil can with a hand pump on it that we attached to an inlet on the side of the engine. We pump in some oil and then bar the engine over while pumping more oil to spread the lubrication out, remove some of the condensation in the engine via the cylinder pressure reliefs and allow our electrician to check out the main generator. We then button it back up and start it up.

@mountainlova1009 The turbo is very much on the engine and functioning. There are some audio recordings I made of #9 on our website where the turbo is much more apparent. They are on the left side of #9's

@rgvrrm Thanks, Yeah no, I watched another video soon after and very quickly noticed that lovely Buchi! I'll have to run up one day and pop by, I've seen my own local RS-1 plenty!

@rgvrrm I heard the wonderful recordings on your website, Is there any chance of a Idle - Notch 8 - Idle recording? Seems to be a lack of 539T recordings on the internet.

Is that a De-rated RS-1? I had figured they were all built with 539T's. Or Is it a 539T? I didn't hear a turbo.
