Tbf, the existence of alien cats could explain why the snails meow, hiss, and have many cat-like qualities in general. Maybe they visited once before the events of SpongeBob In Independence Day, but decided to wait until they became stronger to take over.

Atlantis for me is a interesting place to see in the show, it may a cool idea to see more of the SEA of sponge Bob, not just the small town we all see but maybe a big city or kingdom to explore.
