Your custom setup is quite elaborate. Makes me want to view it in action.

"I am not a great painter of miniatures"

Then produces the finest painted miniatures. What a kidder you are Gilbert!

I LOVE your version Gilbert!

One weekend when I was in college back in the early 80's I returned home and several friends and I played a HUGE game of Submarine. We had three German Type VII-C's vs a convoy with escorts. One sub was on the surface having been damaged after torping an escort while the other two secretly maneuvered into position until the two that were underwater decided to surface in the same hex as the surface sub!!! We still laugh about that game.

I never owned the Battleline version, but I did have the Avalon Hill game in my collection many years ago.

This is an odd one for me, the subject - The Battle of the Atlantic - is my main interest in all military history, and I should really love this game, and yet... for some reason I just never warmed to it. I have absolutely no idea why I don't think more of Submarine, and if I was in your house and you pulled it out, I would be willing to play it, but I wouldn't really enjoy the game.

The only possible reason why I have such a lukewarm opinion of the game might be because I was very young when I last owned it. It's really odd because by all accounts it's a fine game.

I really do love your miniatures version Gilbert, seriously cool!

Excellent job adapting minis to the game! The minis and cards look great! I adapted minis to the Avalanche Press game “The Great War at Sea: Jutland” Love to see your game played!

Back in the 70's I went to the AH Baltimore office. I walked in and a group of guys were playing the Battleline Submarine game was intriged by it. I did purchase it later. Looking back I think thet were working on the new rules for the AH version (I also picked it up when it came out) I did like the Battleline thick counters and it looked great being the big with the maps. AH's advantage was took less space. I think one of the tester was Don Greenwood not sure. I wound up buy the new game release Russian Campaign. I would love to do what you did and then do Jutland and Bismarck

Fantastic! Thank you so much for taking the time to demonstrate your modifications to Submarine. You claim to be no expert painter but those models look great. The miniature markers for depth charge and torpedo attacks really add to the visual appeal. It would be nice, if after all that work, to see this back on the table again.

The Royal Canadian Navy, RCN/Marine Royale Canadienne, MRC, most definitely does not get its due - six years fighting the U-Boats, often under extreme conditions.

Gilbert, thanks for the trip down memory lane. The AH version of Submarine was my first real wargame way back when (excluding 'kid stuff' like Battleship and Stratego). It was challenging for my teenage brain to absorb all the rules, and even more challenging to find players near my own age with whom to play. I like your minis upgrade and the assorted play aids you accumulated! 👍

Great looking game chrome with the miniatures but also the player aids, Gilbert! Superb.
I think Davco 1/3000 are still available in the UK as are the very similar (perhaps related?) Navwar 1/3000 range which are simple but effective and affordable. 1/6000 is also available but perhaps too small now for my eyes [smile].
Bravo!

Interesting episode. I think you nailed V Queen, it's more like a study than a game. That works fine for me however since that is largely the reason I play these big historical games. It remains I my collection. Good video.

I think the "PC Crowd" would demand a different colour for the Japanese pieces if they marketed this game again today? Yellow? Really Oops!!
