China's Xi and Italy's Meloni Meet in Beijing

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met in Beijing on Monday as part of the Italian premier's five-day trip to China. In her first official visit since coming to power in 2022, Meloni offered to broker better trade relations between China and the European Union. This is an opportunity for Italy to advance Italian interests, not the US. It is for Meloni to lose. Meloni should realize that China is rising and the US is not, but it should still pursue both sides for the sake of Italian interests. Ukraine is a lost cause so Italy needs to move on and create its own future, being nimble enough to meet current priorities and leave old habits and ideas in the past.

Xi met Biden too, and what did that do? !00% tariff and more unilateral sanctions. Meetings don't do crap unless there's something to sign, and even then, given the history of the US from reneging on treaties to native Americans to other "rule based" agreements, doesn't mean jack either. Hope it works better with Italy, but not holding my breath.
