Peugeot 408 Team Test: Jack of all trades or Master of none? | Fifth Gear

It’s a new crossover from Peugeot that’s sort of a mash up of estate, crossover, coupe and hatchback. The team find out if this new Peugeot is a jack of all trades or master of none to see if there really is a point in the 408.

I have this car and love it. It's not designed for the race track. The little engine works brilliantly and you simply need to adjust the steering wheel and the seat height to solve the icockpit 'problem' . Boot is cavernous. Very comfortable and well equipped. That was a very childish review.

Proud owner Here 🤨 the Performance is simply adequate I m not planning it to take it to the Track it's a family car however it tops at around 130mph on paper you don't need much more than that
Engines downsize is happening to all Manufacturers even Mercedes & BMW all in name of Emissions not just French cars

I don't think anyone should be surprised by the current reality 🤦

I haven't driven the 408 but after driving a few days the 3008 with the same small driving wheel, i cannot go back to the bulky wheels other manufacturers offer. You can see the display above the wheel and it is perfect and nimble.

I have a 408 and am very happy with it, it's a great car. I'm not sure a review where you try to overfill the boot and laugh at the car is of much use to anyone. We brought it to France for a two week holiday and got everything in the boot no problem.

I know it's "only" a 1.2 with 130hp, but let's be fair, about 15 years ago you needed a 2.0 diesel to get similar horsepower, and you paid a weight penalty.

Also, 3:04 - adjust the reach of the steering wheel a bit, maybe?

Yet if this car was German the boot would be plenty, steering wheel would be revolutionary and the engine would be perfect for everyone. Just saying……..

3 cylinder 1.2 litre - that'll have the wetbelt then? Good luck with that.

I sit as low as possible, with the wheel set low and I have absolutely no problem with seeing my dials.

I think all the new Peugeot line are best looking cars on the road apart from the Audi's I hated Peugeot cars in the early 2000s and 2010s now they are back !!

you have to look over the wheel, not through it

I've currently leased this car in gt line spec in grey.
Build quality is great.
Style is superb.
Steering wheel is great once positioned correctly.
Engine is fine for everday use.
Only fault is a slight delay in acceleration from when stationery .
Overall a good all round value family car.

Personally I quite like it - looks very flashy and from what I've heard, generally good all round.

When turning a traditional steering wheel you cant see rhe dials either as the spokes and airbag getw in the way. I love rhe steering wheel when you adjust it properly. You actually have a better view more of the time

This needs adjusting steering wheel position. It must go down. Peugeot i-cockpit is very convenient.

Fun fact this 408 only comes with a 1.6 turbo in my country of Vietnam. Which solves its biggest issue with having no power at all

When I turn the steering wheel my eyes are usually on the road and surroundings not at speedometer. I only look at the speedo cluster when driving straight. I have been driving a 3008 for the past year the steering position is excellent for me

Any other car feels like driving a bus after driving the Peugeots. The small steering wheels really grow on you and you won't want to go back after you get used to them.
