Transportation tax refund: Hillsborough County still owes taxpayers $521,183,433

In 2018, Hillsborough voters passed an extra one-cent sales tax to improve roads. In 2021, the state Supreme Court found it unconstitutional because the referendum specified how the money should be spent – when that power belongs to the county commission.

With that ruling, the county found itself sitting on more than half a billion dollars. None of it has been spent because it was wrongly collected, and none it has been returned because the process for refunding it is in dispute.

Sales tax holiday? Sounds fishy....you have to buy something to get your money back. What if you don't want to spend money at this time cause of the inflation? I say just give the money back.

That's 4 years for each working person in one county. $300 per person in 4 years for 1 penny.

My point is some folks got $3600 for their stimulus over ther course of under 2 years.
If one county can accumulate $300 per person for a penny over the course of only 4 years. How does the federal government only have the ability to afford $3600 ovee the course of years and years decades of paying taxes for millions of people.

The sell tax holiday will only benefit people who have money to go spend. What if you don't have any money to go spend to get the sell tax??? A check to everyone would benefit everyone including the less fortunate.

show your receipts lol as if anyone/everyone would anticipate this & keep all receipts - typical for Florida - remember when they collected tax on autos bought out of state I still know folks who never got that refund as promised

The citizens should vote to decide if to get a $300.00 check or better the town through parks, social programs, educational facilities, etc ..
