Marigolds are Colorful Edible Flowers

Показать описание
Marigolds originate from Central and South America where they bloom from early Summer to late Autumn. The vibrantly colorful flower pedals are edible raw or dried and crushed as a spice similar to Saffron. Flowers are used to dye silk, wool, and even egg yolks when added to chicken feed. Pollinators love the nearly everlasting flowers, making them a great companion plant for vegetables. They make a wonderful cut flower that will last weeks in a glass of water.

You can eat more than just the flower everybody. You’re missing out if you’re not eating the greens! The stems and leaves are completely edible. Great flavor. I miss not being able to buy it at the market. They make great salads and stirfry. They’re also good companion plants for tomatoes they keep disease bugs away. Unfortunately marigolds are not year round where it snows. They shrink back to nothing and don’t come back until it warms up again.

Wonderful video. Thank you :) We grow tons of marigolds, too. They are amazing for all the reasons you mentioned. They are also helpful for vision. Macular degeneration runs in my family and one of the key ingredients in many vision supplements is marigold extract. We juice a few marigold flowers along with our greens and don't mind the flavor at all. Going to dry some and use in cooking and teas. The colors are so vibrant and especially in the autumn just lovely to see in our garden and the fragrance - Like you mentioned - bees, butterflies and moths really love them. So If people want to help our beloved pollinators marigolds are a blessing!

I read there are some marigolds that you shouldn't eat. They all look the same to me. Is this true?

Some of these are edible, some aren't, and no one gives a species name.

Do you have to prune them to get more flowers or do they take care of themselves?
