It is not so much making robots look like humans but rather having robots able to interact in human space. Domestic animals such as cats or dogs work well in a human space as we have become accustomed to reading their body language and anticipating their reaction to stimulus. This stimulates what is called mirror neurons and evokes similar feeling in us. If the 'use' of this robot is to convey emotion it needs this essence. This is why a roomba will not be able to convey its emotions with beeps.

For some reason, I can see this robot having a flamboyant-homosexual personality...

Will they ever learn? They think imitating the human behavior will be enough to consider these robots emotional. They're only considering the result (the visible part) of a most complex process. They just can't create real emotions with inorganic materials. Even if they build perfect imitators, where's the real pain in a bunch of bolts?

Don't worry people, it's a huge step from something mimicking emotion, to something having emotions.

I'd be embarressed to be a member of the team that designed that! It looks like a refrigerator with lipstick on, and its facial expressions make it look as though its having a stroke.

I'm right there with you.

I often refer to robots as living beings. It's mostly because I see more similarities with life than not.

If I'm willing to accept a flower as a living creature, then I must be willing to accept a robot.

I disagree with you, the purpose of a robot is not simulate it has emotions, we all know that's a fake made by a machine completely automatic and without any sense. Anyway you are right when you say robots can annoy ppl or intimidate them, specially if they are similar to humans, but that's the same point again, why do we have o make them look like humans? they have nothing to do with us since they are just machines made to help us!

I don't know what sort of emotion it was trying to convey at the end. Disgust? Laughter? Shock?

Actually the word "robot" was coined by the Czechoslovakian author Carl Kapek, and robots themselves were arguably invented, in a primitive form, by Da Vinci (his mechanical lion and automatic moving tea table) and yes, the Japanese (a small moving doll that could serve tea and a number of theatrical puppets that could move themselves using wound up internal springs and perform a handful of simple motions)

Google "Ancient Robots", fascinating stuff.

Imagine it going trough a town shooting laser beams out of its eyes and saying "I am pretty..." Over and over again..
And the look on its face doesnt change...
