I was only 2 in 1966, so this was the first England victory on the world stage for me. Watching it again now, reminds me how I could not sit still, I chain smoked and paced up and down for the entire match. What a game!

Remember running and jumping around my living room when these as on. The winning drop goal was just and incredible moment.

My first son was born on the 10th of October, so he was a month and a bit old (think this was mid-late November) and I was holding him while doing so, he was basically my rugby ball that morning. His mother was out shopping with her sister and she said the shops were empty save for a few women out and about, as without trying to be sexist, it seemed like all the boyfriends and husbands and sons were all at home watching the rugby! Brian’s years to my eyes every time I watch this, which I do every now and then.

At that point I worked for o2, who sponsored the England team, as you can see on the kit, and when I was next in work, after my standard paternity tine plus some holidays, I didn’t have user IDs for some new systems that had been installed, so I didn’t have anything to do all day and o2 were having a celebration for England’s win, where everyone in the building (there were 2000+ of us) got a glass of champagne if they wanted it, and a few other things, and because I wasn’t able to work I sat in the break area and had about fifteen glasses of champagne and got absolutely leathered at work! Such a great day! The whole time, my son being born (obviously the best and most important part here), but then the tournament, the time off work, the World Cup win, everything was great, with England, and Britain/the UK, being such a great place to live at that point in time. Hard to believe just, what(?), seven years later, the country became turkeys voting for Christmas, actively ushering-in over a decade of poverty because our government at the time apparently caused the global financial crisis of 2008, starting with the Spanish and American housing/mortgage crisis! 2003 was just the peak, the crest of the wave, with this World Cup being the pinnacle, and personally along with my son being born and me being 22 and still having a full head of hair, life was excellent up here in the North West of England!
