In an interview with “It Happened in Hollywood podcast”, Thora Birch talks about the stain on American Beauty due to Kevin Spacey's sexual misconduct allegations. American Beauty was released 20 years ago, and the film proved to be Birch’s break-out performance. Unfortunately, the film that proved to be one of Birch’s greatest has now been defiled due to Kevin Spacey’s disgusting actions. Birch asks us to see past the controversy involving her co-star and to appreciate the other aspects of the film.
It’s very difficult to look past Kevin Spacey and not automatically think about the horrible things he’s done, because he’s such a staple and presence within the film (especially since he won an Oscar for this role). However, Thora makes a very valid point…the film isn’t just about Spacey. Especially with the performances of Annette Bening (who was nominated for an Oscar) and Thora Birch (whose performances was wrongfully overlooked by the Oscars).
