MIT researchers have discovered that mental maps in the brain are activated not only by physical movement but also when thinking about sequences of experiences. In a study led by Associate Professor Mehrdad Jazayeri and published in Nature, scientists found that the entorhinal cortex holds these cognitive maps, which are used during mental simulations. This groundbreaking study, featuring lead author Sujaya Neupane and co-author Ila Fiete, marks the first cellular evidence of mental simulation in nonspatial domains, providing new insights into brain function and memory formation.
