Michigan's Arab American voters say Kamala Harris will have to win them back

In key US swing-state Michigan, Democratic voters of Arab and Middle Eastern heritage say Kamala Harris is going to have to win them back, after they were alienated by President Joe Biden's unwavering support for Israel's military offensive in Gaza.

"We are in listening mode right now," says Osama Siblani, publisher of The Arab American News. But others, like business lawyer Soujoud Hamade, remain skeptical.

Accepting the Democratic presidential nomination at the party’s convention on, Harris pledged to get a Gaza ceasefire “done” and ensure Palestinians “realise their right to “dignity, security, freedom and self- determination.” But there was outrage among pro-Palestinian delegates that their request for a speaker spot at the convention was rejected.

The group Muslim Women for Harris-Walz said the decision sent a “terrible message” and announced it was disbanding and withdrawing its support from the campaign.

American Arabs and Muslims may not be overly happy about the way Harris is handling the Gaza crisis, but they do need to bear in mind that it is Trump's radical advisers, and not those of Harris, that want Islam banned in the United States.

A disappointing video. You interviewed three people amd seemed to spend more time showing us around Deerborn than getting the opinions of Muslims. The woman spoke well; America should get out of its forever wars. I would include Ukraine in that. In my opinion America's role in that conflict is provocative and endangers everyone. I think the same about its relationship to China. In my opinion the biggest threat to global security and peace comes from the United States. It is also the greediest country in its use of resources and lacking in compassion and generosity in how it treats the poor.The fundamental difference between the Democrats and Republicans at least at federal level is small.
