Just for information. All the crew is well. They sailed with a couple of buddy boats, and the first one of them arrived just as the boat went down.

Amazing how calm the captain is. He talks very sweet and says goodbye to his boat while his wife is crying. Calm all the time❤

This is heart breaking. I found this from the most recent video uploaded by _Sailing Uma_ who are refitting their Pearson 36 currently, and installing a series of watertight bulkheads. The point was made that a lot of production boats these days have spade rudders, which are vulnerable to this kind of damage and tearing a major hole in the hull, and don't have any kind of subdivision, so if it happens it's uncontrollable flooding, and the boat will founder. It's kind of crazy, these companies are literally building death traps worthy of Boeing.

So sad, glad everyone is safe now. Heartbreaking

That's called a single point of failure system and it's the bane of modern design.
It is not difficult to design a spade rudder that won't sink the boat.
But that's what happens when engineering decisions are made by accountants.

This is one of the most scary video I've ever watched on YouTube. Every one that already did an ocean passage has this fear. The lady crying, the mast sinking... in the end was good to read they are all well. Gee...terrifying!

I'm glad the crew are safe and I'm sorry for their loss. I hope in the near future an investigation comes from this that can reduce the probability of such a failure in the future. It's good that the crew captured video of the failure location. That can answer a lot of questions. As a mechanical engineer, I am surprised at the condition of the break. It makes me think more about the assertions of some owners and designers that spade rudders (like the on on this boat, and mine as well) are less robust than more traditional designs.

I just started traveling the Caribbean full time making YouTube videos on my sailboat and seeing this sure makes it hit home on how fast things go south.

Does this boat not have a watertight bulkhead in front of the rudder? The new Arcona465 seems to have it.
