My mock trial lawyer said that it depends on the context. If someone smiles in a mugshot, the jury can be led to believe he/she actually had a justifiable reason to commit the offense. We actually saw it happen in one case, a guy assaulted his friend and his mugshot smile was brought up. However, turns out, the reason he assaulted his friend was due to comments he made online about his sister. He went from asshole to good brother in a second. The mugshot quickly became a joke. And fyi, this guy definitely assaulted his friend, punches and all.

It doesn't matter if you smile or not if you are scary looking.

If you look scary you are the perpetrator

If you are cute you are an Teddy Bear

I am an intimidating looking guy and I ussually dress a little bit colorfull so people around me feel relieved around me

If I smile they are going to say "I am had my fun, no remorse"

If I don't smile "He is a cold blooded psycho and should kept behind bars"

Not just a jury either. In higher-profile cases, those mugshots get published, and social media commentators will gloriously inform everyone that your smile means you think it's all a joke, that you have no remorse, etc. (This is playing out now in that case in Idaho.)
