Blazing Fast but Frustrating - Bambu Lab P1P Review

Reviewing the Bambu Lab P1P that I bought late last year with their surprise announcement of this newest addition to the Bambu Lab X1 3D Printer Lineup

I originally bought 2 X1 Carbon Printers from their Kickstarter then preordered the P1P once it was announced. This machine definitely has its quirks but Speed & Print Quality aren't one of them. Honestly tempted to buy a 2nd P1P 😂

Pro Tip. Add an "Old" folder where your print files are, and move the files into that folder once they are printed.
It keeps the active folder almost empty.

Most of the things are justified but some are just wild. I think you just got a bad printer. This is exactly what its supposed to be, a stripped down X1. All these people complaining about the screen, you guys want all the upgrades that the x1 has without paying for them. this is what you get for the price you pay! If you have a bigger budget and want all the upgrades, GET THE X1 it’s that simple. The whole purpose of this is to get people into a bambu printer, someone who wants speed and precision, and doesnt care about fancy screens and side panels, but doesnt have the budget for the x1.

The fact is that below 5k no other printers in the market can achieve this level of part dimensional accuracy out of the box. That was a major advantage we saw when we got these printers. We printed our in house tests and all of them came out great. The X1 Prints the Taulman and 3Dxtech nylons so well that we haven’t had to use the markforged mark 2 for months now.

I've had my P1P for only 3 days now and compared to the 3 printers I currently own (Qidi, X2, Prusa mini)...I'm blown away!

I've had the P1P now for a few months. It's my 1st and only 3D printer. After a fairly quick learning curve getting it working properly I've had no issues with it. I have the light, fan and camera and installed (the camera sucks and no timelapse recording available but I've read it's coming). The WiFi has worked perfectly for me every time. The speed has toppled a few project and created a mess so I've had to use a brim more then the default to prevent it, but once I add a brim it works. I'm considering getting the AMS soon too. I'm glad I waited a little longer to purchase my 1st printer and very glad I choose this on.

I have both printers and I would say I’ve had most of the same experiences between the two. If you’re only printing PLA and PETG, as I mostly do, the P1P is wonderful and there isn’t anything really “bad” about it. But using the X1C is just nicer, quicker to transfer and start initiliazing. I have the P1P early bird fan, light and camera add-ons, but the camera is disappointing. I think the lag issues on the display and the camera lag on the app have to be related to whatever control board they are using, and that could be why it takes so much longer to unzip and process the models as well. I’d like to see a better, faster control board that boosts the performance of those things. I’m sure some of them can be tweaked or optimized by firmware updates to be improved, but if it’s a hardware limitation, it’s not going to be quite enough to match the X1C.

I’m planning to do more printing for commercial purposes, and I’m still torn between buying more P1Ps or getting more X1CCs. I love the AMS but it’s not critical for commercial printing of single color items. From a purely dollar perspective, getting two P1Ps for the same price as one X1CC is a no brainer, as you can print almost double the amount in the same time going with two P1Ps. But the user experience of the X1CC and the ease of loading and changing filament on the AMS are so enjoyable, it’s making the decision harder:)

Head-to-head comparisons printing full plates of identical print-in-place models, I have found better results with the X1C. That could be because of the better filament extrusion tweaking, first layer monitoring, or even just the enclosure of the X1C. Kind of ironically, the better results aren’t significant enough to justify the X1C cost, but like Uncle Jessy said, it’s the little things that just make the X1C more enjoyable to use.

Regardless of which you buy, 3D printing is so much more enjoyable because of these printers, and I highly recommend them.

the file name of the last print job is actually BBL, short for BambuLab where it was sent from

I abandoned FDM printers a few years ago, and have been using SLA printers, mostly. This printer has me wanting to get back into FDM. Thanks for the great video!

Thanks for the detailed review! I just got the P1P to join my X1 Carbon. They do have their little flaws, but cool printers overall.

@Uncle Jesse try a better SD card, you might find that suddenly the screen is a lot more responsive as a result. Especially when you have the camera installed. I have two of these and I found this out randomly by having my own card in one one and the stock one in the other and noticing a massive difference between the two.

It also speeds up downloads and unzipping

First of all, thank you for your update. I appreciate your viewpoint as a business owner selling goods manufactured with 3D printers.

As a business owner too, I find it disconcerting that we would spend $700+ or $1500 and don't get any information on the motherboards and modules, except 'motion controllers = Dual-Core Cortex M4.' You buy a laptop at these price points and the hardware descriptions are the very first thing you see. So all I know is anecdotal evidence that the P1P does not have the same motherboard and wifi, that these are stripped down too. Even another "walled garden" company, Apple, shows specifications. The 'Right to Repair' is now law in some states and hopefully soon as national law. By this I mean we should expect full descriptions and layout diagrams.

I have the p1p and I have been lucky that everything works lol I never use the touch screen but I love the handy app. I just use it to control everything with it and doing reprints from my history. It has been so much fun to play with. I wish more printers would come with apps, I can set to preheat without being in the room 🤣

Thankfully I've not had any issues like you've encountered. This printer has been amazing. I seem to have been missed by the "slow to send" issues. I've heard others have. Need that LAN mode enabled.

Great Review. I have the X1C and love it. I truly wish all Printer companies would go to a USB drives. Resin printer companies seem to adopt but FDM haven't even started. Also I wish they would all have an actual network card not WIFI. Wifi has a ton of redundancy built into the protocols and I believe that is part of the reason that most of them suck at file transfer. Hard Wire doesn't have that issue. I think I will stick with the X1 for now. Unless they come out with a larger format version of the X1.

Completely agree with everything. That being said it's still my daily printer and I've completely stopped using my enders.

The biggest issue for the p1p/x1c is that they work so well that it's going to be hard to diagnose problems with the machine when they occur. I've fixed up and upgraded everything on my old printers while I haven't done anything to the p1p.

After owning the XC1 @AMS since December I am considering a 2nd Bambu. I print mostly with PLA as well. I have been thinking about the P1P as the 2nd unit. After this review I think Ill get a 2nd X1C instead

Totally agree. I always say I would've been willing to pay $50 more for the same screen as the X1C. It's terrible! Love your videos buddy.

Strange, i have had none of the network issues you mention. Mine transfers via wifi in about 20-30 seconds and starts the calibration / leveling right away.

i did have same issues as you with camera.

either way, its the best printer (my 9th), i have ever owned and im ditching my prusas immediately. cant believe they did this well on their first try, that immediately makes all my prusas seem like an ancient and huge pain to work with.
