Hidden reefs of the deep sea: exploring modern and prehistoric oceans

Laura Robinson’s research has taken her to the furthest reaches of the world–drilling ice cores in Antarctica, operating deep-sea robotics to the deep ocean and mapping desert rocks. Now at the University of Bristol she brings together scientists and students in a team dedicated to understanding the history of the Earth. Using equipment designed to analyse trace amounts of radioactive and stable elements her team are discovering how and why the ocean changes over time and the impact that these changes have on the diverse deep-water corals reefs that live on ocean mountains.

After her studies at the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford she continued her research across the Atlantic at the California Institute of Technology. Whilst in the USA she developed her expertise in deep-sea exploration through working at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Here she was able to mount two expeditions to the Southern Ocean including mapping and imaging the previously unexplored seamounts off Cape Horn. Now back in the UK as a European Research Council grantee, Laura’s most recent voyage crossed the Atlantic Ocean from Tenerife to Trinidad exploring new terrain and collecting samples to document the changing ocean environment, in search for evidence of past climate changes. Looking at the history of the Earth's climate, she may find clues of what might happen in the future.
