The high-mountain lake Ritsa can rightfully be considered the main attraction of Abkhazia. It has long been favored by locals and tourists. Previously, a mountain river flowed here, but after a large earthquake, part of the Pshegishkha massif collapsed in Laships, forming a natural barrier. Scientists suggest that this happened about 250 years ago. So it turned out to be the most beautiful lake in the country.
The area of Lake Ritsa is 1.27 square kilometers.
Interestingly, the water in the lake retains its transparency at any time of the year, and the temperature does not rise above 18 degrees. In winter, the lake mirror is rarely covered with an ice crust. This phenomenon occurs only in the harshest winters. Trips here at such a time can be unsafe, due to snowfall and ice on a narrow access road.
Depending on the seasons, the color of the water in the lake changes. This is due to the flowing rivers and the life cycle of phytoplankton.
