When I was in West Berlin and East Berlin in the 1980s it wasn’t difficult to still find war damage. I recall in the old diplomatic quarter there were strange huge gaps in the rows of buildings in blocks where damaged buildings had been bulldozed, leaving one building on each corner and nothing in between.
In the same area a strong breeze forced trees to sway revealing a disturbing whole side of a large building with hundreds of shrapnel and bullet holes. A site that’s stayed with me some 35 years later.
