S1 – Ep 472 – Warden, Free State!

The journey from Kestell to Warden was enjoyable, with a planned detour onto a gravel road which led us to the abandoned Afrikaskop Station. Despite a brief ten-minute rain shower typical of Free State weather, we arrived in Warden and we marvelled at its numerous old sandstone buildings, including what we believe to be the biggest sandstone church in the Southern Hemisphere. While exploring this quaint town we found yet another abandoned station. We took a walk through the impressive Warden Lodge, which date back to 1909, before the town was even established. Before hitting the road again, we couldn't resist indulging in delicious pap-and-wors purchased from a local shop, adding a flavourful highlight to our adventure. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #warden #freestate

The music played while visiting the church was beautiful.

I enjoy seeing all these little dorpies, but saddened by the obvious degradation - roads in tatters, stations destroyed etc, etc. a proud ANC legacy.

Wow! What a magnificent church! And the hymn Eternal Father was so appropriate for today which is Anzac day here when we commemorate those who died in the first and second world wars. Meant so much to me. Enjoyed my visit to Warden

I am sure traveling in all these towns makes you appreciate living in the Western Cape.

Hi you two! Thanks for this interesting trip. Warden is a beautiful place. Streets a little rough, but the treelined streets and neat sandstone houses make up for that. The DRC is enormous! I really love the hymn you sometimes play during your visit inside churches. The Warden station is sad to see, but maybe we should just learn to accept that as a sign of the times we live in. The Lodge is also very grand for its more than 120 years. I'll be waiting for a lift on your next excursion. Keep safe!

So beautiful all the churches in the small towns around SA. Full of character and nicely built. But same already starting to fall apart in 5he small towns in KZN and parts of Eastern Cape

Good to see the town as the road to Durban from Gauteng goes past it! The Free State is beautiful and especially when it has rained.

Hello again. Another town I know well. Yes Warden has taken strain for a very long time. As far back as 1977. I can imagine what it's like now.
