Lauro is a composer whose greatness is deserving of recognition above and beyond his accomplishments in the reinterpretation of music from the popular and folk traditions.

Composer: Antonio Lauro
Artists: Cristiano Poli Cappelli

The son of two Italians, a barber and a musician, Antonio Lauro (1917-1986) was born in Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela. He began at an early age to take music lessons from his father. The family moved to Caracas, a city with many stimuli and full of opportunities and he started taking music lessons, studying piano and composition at the Academy of Music and Declamation.

In 1951, Lauro was imprisoned, because of his democratic convictions, by General Marcos Pérez Jiménez, this however did not stop his composing activities, it was during his time in prison that he wrote two of his most important works: the Sonata for guitar and the famous Venezuelan Suite, followed by the Concerto for guitar and orchestra.
In his compositions for guitar Lauro aimed to unite popular Venezuelan music with complex forms of the European tradition. They are highly attractive, melodious works, full of spirit, charm and brilliant writing for the instrument.

Beautifully played by Cristiano Poli Cappelli, one of the leading Italian guitarists. He already recorded several successful albums for Brilliant Classics with music by Gangi, Tansman, Carlevaro and Castelnuovo-Tedesco.

Love all Venezuela music and Maestro Lauro was my favorite music teacher. RIP

I want to point out two inaccuracies in your information, as the composer's biographer: He did not receive lessons during his childhood, since his father died before Lauro was 5 years old, in 1922. And the Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra was not composed in prison, but in 1956, premiered by himself. This is important to know so that biographical errors are not imposed. Alejandro Bruzual

In the 70's, when I was studying in school, my state of Kerala was the favourite destination for Hippie tourists because of the easy availability of ganga. They used to walk around the rural areas with their only possessions of guitars on their shoulders and marijuana in their lips .We were attracted by the hitherto unknown sweet guitar music. Their favourite abode was the Adam and Eve beaches at Kovalam where we used to visit occasionally mainly for seeing the fully devoted Sun God worshippers trying their level best to get the blessings on each and every body parts of the worshippers and also for enjoying their beautiful guitar music. Their music and playing were as beautiful as here and I would have been sure about my claim that those hippies had, in fact, played this music if this music was composed earlier than the 70's! Irrelevant thoughts but music reminds me of anything of my bygone era even if it had no relationship with music. Thanks. Another blessed day of enjoyment.

Years ago, before the guitar entered my world, I had a therapist. She told me, as the guitar and I were becoming more acquainted with one another, that it was an attachment device. Many years have since passed. My relationship with the guitar is stronger than ever and she....well she is no longer even a faint memory.
