This is also why in Pokemon, a worthless pokemon called Magikarp evolves into Gyarados. It's based on the myth of a fish turning into a dragon.

My favorite story is of the 108 dragons and how they became the saviors of humanity and the first emperors body guards kind of like the first knights.

I would hightly recommend any Dragon lover to read The Temeraire series by Naomi Novik, a british naval captain during the Napoleonic war is bonded to a Chinese Celestial Dragon. In a world where dragons are used as beasts of war and have various different breeds. Also they are sentient so they talk.

The first time I heard of the Dragons Gate was in a song by Trivium called: Becoming The Dragon.
Except it was a Japanese parallel where it was a koi fish named Nishikgoi, who swam through oceans of adversity to get to the falls of the Dragons Gate.

I first heard about chinese dragons being bringers of water and their influence over crops from Jade Empire. Its an excellent game if you like Role playing games and mythical chinese creatures and lore.

Excellent video, as always! I learned a lot of new things from this video. Loving the production and narration.

LiYu(鲤鱼) is the name for the species of fish, not a name for a individual fish. Any fish can do that if it leap over the dragon gate.

LiYu litterally just means carp in chinese. Yu is fish, and Li identifies it as a carp. The actual tale is that the daughter of the Jade Emperor told his father about how difficult it was for the carps or LiYu to swim upstream. So the jade emperor promised that any carp that can do this difficult task would become a dragon instantly. So the carps or the LiYu would have a competition every year and those that made it became dragons. So multiple LiYu or carps became dragons.

It more of a proverb than anything else, like if you can endure and do the hard work you could beat the odds and become successful like a dragon
