An SSD NAS finally worth buying? - LincStation N1

I'm excited about the LincStation N1 for two reasons. 1) It's the first entirely solid-state NAS I've had my hands on, and 2) It's running unRAID out of the box. But is this combination enough to make the system worth owning? Well, we have an answer for you so stick around and find out!

2.5gb is the weak spot this unit with nvme, should be at the minimum a 10gb nic similar to the Ugreen offering

Single 2.5 GbE and n5105 make this a great NAS if released a couple of years back, but not in 2024.

I do like unraid and have been using it for over 10 years. I don't mind the storage creation

These guys reached out to me to review something recently and their products look slick. When I asked them if they deliberately ripped off LinkinPark's logo, they quit responding to me lol

unraid interface is great !!! it does need a 10Gbe nic! intel N5105 is a bit to weak, N300 or 305 would be better, unraid 7 is recommended

Great review! But what's with the crazy 4k Crystal Diskmark results!?

Yes, you can turn off the "breathing" LED lights. Use a web browser to type in your N1's local IP address, followed by :50000 (port number). Unfortunately, it is in Chinese. Do a screenshot before you make any changes so you can set it back if you mess it up.

for those not liking the 2.5gbit ethernet connection, this unit has a usb-c connector. those can do 10 gbit, I imagine you can hook up a 10gbit usb c network adapter to it. The only fun part would be to see if you can land a driver. for fun I'll likely try this approach, though my plan was to use this mostly for docker and archive storage

So close for me. If it had 10GB, I'd be interested. Dual 10Gb, I'd be very interested, Dual 10Gb with a non Celeron CPU, I'd be sold!!

Thanks for the video, I think is a compelling NAS, however, the fact the it is NVME make the 2.5gbe sounds not right. I was surprised that you didn't mentioned the 2.5gbe as a downside. For some people 10gbe on mvme storage is a must. I am looking for something similar to the one in the video but 10gbe. Thanks 😊 for the video.

Would've liked a power consumption check at idle and full load..

Odd choice for the OS as i thought unraid still doesn’t like SSDs in the array or has that’s changed now?

How about a cwwk p5 with nvme carrier module ? Which have n100/n305 option and with nvme carrier you can have quad nvme plus two sata

The problem of this nas is the slow network, and included unraid basic plan only have 6 device limit if remember correctly, mount more device or go UD you need more device limit, right ? So we cant use those usb port for more /portable storage when all 6ssd bay was populated

Love the video, do think this is pretty pricey especially once you populate the drive pools too but....I am a self-confessed Unraid fanboy with 3 currently running in my house....I dont get what you mean about the storage creation being bad...you can configure seperate pools(or as standalone drives), you can have extra(or no!) parity drives...I think you could have explained a bit about the parity system...apologies this is one of the first of your videos Ive watched and I did enjoy it, but perhaps I dont know the level of your members/subscribers when not really explaining that part. Again though I really did enjoy the video...I do wonder why manufacturers are so drawn to creating things with flashing/pulsing lights that do nothing, and cant be turned off!!

Humm i wonder how the shared out all the 8 lanes of PCIe.

The CPU has 2 SATA ports built in, along with the WiFi, graphics output and USB 3.2.
So if they gave each NVME 1 lane, that would have left 4 lanes free.... more than enough to chuck a 10Gbit NIC in there!
They could even squeeze in 2 more NMVE slots with a lane each.

Put that 10Gbit NIC in and then they really do have something worth buying.

if you wanted to could yo wipe out unraid and install something else such as proxmox or truenas instead?

on ally x press, 16TB usb thumb drives are cheaper than a big mac or a one way bus ticket to Hell, MI.
