I’m no meteorologist- but when I worked in the Phillipines after typhoon Haiyan, I understood it is actually the extremely low pressure which does ‘suck’ the water to the lowest pressure point. In this case emptying the bay. That low pressure point of course then moves, meaning the bay will fill again and likely surge onto the land. Tragic for all involved! All the best from Australia.

The wind does not “suck” the water out, the low pressure does. It’s like putting your finger on top of a straw and lifting it a little in a cup of water. The water in the straw will be higher than the surrounding water which will drop a little. The higher air pressure around the storm pushes down harder than the low pressure in the middle of the storm, creating a raised area of water in the middle and lower water levels on the outside. This is what causes the “sucking.” Since the storm and the low pressure are moving this raised area of water moves with it and makes landfall. The wind then gives it a push and surges it further on land.

To everyone on here, tsunami’s aren’t just created by earthquakes. It’s just a large scale displacement of water, causing large waves. Can occur many different ways.

The water receding is a very bad sign. Water can be "pushed" into other areas, but it always returns with exceptional force. We continue to pray for everyone affected. Stay safe!

With the Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004, the water first receded in a "drawback" : a warning sign.

With technology advancements why in hell are reporters still are being put in mortal danger to provide reports. I am sure that that can be done remotely.

The phenomenon, reminiscent of what occurred during Hurricanes Ian in 2022 and Irma in 2017, will probably last only a few hours — and could suddenly reverse, with damaging results.
