In a bid to make urban spaces safer and more accessible for all, Cape Town is transforming one of its busiest streets into a car-free haven every Sunday.

The Bree Street Experiments sees locals and visitors to the city centre connecting with local businesses and communities, in a vehicle-free zone.

Our reporter, Latashia Naidoo, filed this report.

Tune into Newzroom Afrika DStv channel 405 for more.

This here is my bread and butter. Excellent initiative. Driving in and out of CPT CBD is a nightmare (especially during peak hours). Hopefully this will promote the use of public transport (including minibus taxis JP SMITH!!)

Yet Bree street in Joburg is still a mess.

Went for a wander round the CBD with my camera last Sunday (as I did many times years ago without incident) but in the space of the first 10 minutes was followed and approached by young 'street guys' asking for the "time" whilst checking me out, these guys crossing the road but still following me, lookouts and target spotters on virtually every corner. Another 10 minutes and I'd have been mugged. Didn't see any police or security...probably all in Bree Street protecting the business and property developers. Get more police patrols, get the muggers off the streets and we could enjoy THE WHOLE CITY.

As always the Western Cape is the only province not run like a spaza shop. Joburg still thinks it’s a good idea to bring in TukTuks, even though they’re not road worth.

Got news for the urban planners. The streets of Cape Town have very light traffic for most of the day.

Sundays and 1st Thursdays yes. But that is it...

CPT CBD is way over crowded. Notice the scafholding in the background. There are 3 in the space of 100m on Loop Street. Normal day to day workers still need to get in and out. No one gives à sh1t, just stopping where they like, to lazy to find a parking or PAY for parking at héritage square.

I drive Bree every day so understand. Cool initiative. BUT UBER DRIVERS AND DELIVERY DRIVERS NEED TO STOP BEING SO INCONSIDIRATE AND LAZY. GET OF YOUR ARSE AND WALK AN EXRA 20 METRES ACROSS THE ROAD.

If only they can spend this much energy on housing and education in the western cape. This is just a fruitless exercise.

Next thing they will say you can not drive the whole day in that area . And then they add more areas until it is most of cape town. I do not like any ideas that limits people. Let people drive
