In this video Heimler introduces Unit 6 Topic 1 (6.1) of the AP World History curriculum. From 1750-1900 there was a massive wave of imperialism especially from European countries like England and France, but also Asian countries like Japan.

The reasons for this wave of empire building basically comes down to this: culture, nationalism, and economics. In Europe, people believed in the superiority of their culture and therefore felt duty-bound to deliver it to the rest of the world. Additionally, the Industrial Revolution created the need for raw materials and new markets for goods to be sold across the world.

Nationalism drove Japan to claim Korea as a colony, and such meddling landed them into the Sino-Japanese War with China, which they handily won due to the modernization that attended the Meiji Restoration.

If you have any questions, leave them below and Heimler will answer forthwithly.

My notes:
(Although he didn't say Sino-Japanese war, I'm pretty sure that's what he was describing)

Imperialism - A new wave of empire building
Most imperialistic advances were made by Europeans, as they believed in the superiority of the white race and of their culture
The White Man’s Burden - Europeans felt duty-bound to share their culture with others because they thought it was so much better
Darwinism - Darwin taught the scientific idea that only the fittest survive
Social Darwinism - The application of Darwinism in politics, the idea that strong nations should eat weak nations.
“Evidence” - They were some of the most wealthy nations, which “proved” that they (the strong) had eaten the weak
Missionaries - European Christians spread in an attempt to convert as many people as possible
Built schools teaching religion, as well as math/science
Built hospitals
Helped abolish the slave trade
Nationalism - strong identification of a group of people who share an ethnic identity and a language who become loyal to a single state
Colonized other countries to show off their nationalism
Britain - After losing America, found many other colonies all over the world, with focus on India
France - Established colonies all around Africa, Indo-China, Southeast Asia
Japan - Encroached on Korea’s economy/politics, angered the Qing (China).
Sino-Japanese War - Japan had a better military from their modernization, beat China, and took Korea as their colony
As industrialization increases nations needed somewhere to sell the goods they were producing
British, Dutch, and French governments made trade agreements with local rulers in India, the East-Indies, and Africa
Gave them the right to establish and defend these trading posts
This led to raising armies and eventually conquering territory in these places
As a result, Britain had the wealthiest economy in the world due to the size of their empire
