Mel Torme aka The Velvet Fog (a title he didn't care for) was a jazz singer, actor and song writer. He was noted for his smooth effortless vocals and his unsurpassed scat singing. The most famous song he wrote was "The Christmas Song". He referred to it as one of his least favorite compositions. In the 1970s, he performed as often as 200 times a year in venues all over the world. Legendary singer Ella Fitzgerald known for her trademark scat singing sited Torme as one of her major influences. Mel Torme cited in a 1994 book that the Andrew Sisters were one of his all time favorite singing groups.
"Take the 'A' Train" was written in 1939 by Billy Strayhorn and became the signature tune of the Duke Ellington orchestra. Lyrics were later added in 1944 by Joya Sherrill and it became a jazz standard. Mel Torme recorded this amazing version on his 1961 studio album “Mel Torme: The Duke Ellington and Count Basie Songbooks”. Enjoy! Thanks For Your Comments.

I didn't know there were lyrics to this song. I'm always used to hearing it as an instrumental. This is a pleasant surprise. Mel has such a smooth sounding voice. Well, need to go back to bed for rest...
