Astronauts Mark Leonard Nimoy’s Passing

NASA Astronaut Mike Fincke and ESA European Space Agency Astronaut Luca Parmitano reflect on the inspiration that actor Leonard Nimoy’s character Mr. Spock in the television series Star Trek had on scientists, engineers, space explorers and fans around the globe.

He was great actor inspired many people around the globe, his character, his voice, greatly contributed to science fiction, art and music, we will miss you, 'Live Long and Prosper".

After watching Star Trek my interest in Space really spiked, and it never wavered.  We'll miss him dearly.  My condolences. to his family.  Rest in Peace Mr. Nimoy.

I think Astronaut Fincke is wearing the Air Force Space Command patch on his bomber jacket.  It has a delta, which resembles the Star Trek badge. That's a great way to honor Mr. Nimoy, who was an icon. Very sad day.  (We used to pretend our Space Command patches were "communicators" (more of a TNG reference) when I was stationed at Malmstrom AFB in the early 90's.) Nimoy came to Montana to film "Holy Matrimony, " and I missed the opportunity to meet him in person. Now he has gone. Boldly. Thanks, NASA/ESA, for your fine tribute. LLAP

It's a good thing that the effort of Gene Roddenberry and Star Trek crew, among them Mr Spock character, inspire generations with two powerful tools, imagination and science. R.I.P Leonard Nimoy.

The passing of Mr Nimoy brings back to me my favorite Star Trek quote:

What is so striking in the title, "Astronauts *Mark Leonard* Nimoy’s Passing", is that Mark Leonard was the actor who played Spock's father!

Mr. Parmitano (IMO) has a striking resemblance to Picard (Patrick Stewart).  I almost thought that was him for a split second.  How appropriate..., and he even has a French-sounding accent to my American ears.  At any rate, thank you both for these beautiful words, in memory of one of the greatest actors of all time.

I remember the scene in the big bang theory when, at Christmas, Penny gave Sheldon a napkin sighed by (the now late) Leonard Nimoy, and he was really grateful for the gift, then Penny said,
''Sorry about the smudge, he wiped his mouth.''(not accurate I know).
And Sheldon froze. Ten said.
''Do you realise that I actually poses the DNA of Mr Spock.'' ect ect.
Then he awkwardly hugs Penny, she looks over to Leonard and says.
''Look, Sheldon is hugging me!''
I love that moment, Penny gave Sheldon the greatest gift he could have never imagined. LOL

That`s very sweet from astronauts to do!! I can`t believe that he died!! I found today on You Tube some old cowboy series called Bonanza and there it was Leonard Nimoy!! I couldn`t believe it! It was funny because we all know him the most as Mr.Spock. But he was good!! :) R.I.P Leonard Nimoy!
