After this movie came out, I wonder how many women went to Jamaica to see if Winston had any brothers/friends to get their groove with?

I went to Negril - Hedonism and read the book, “Stella Gets her Groove Back”, while I was there in 1998. Everyone at the resort called me Stella. I was 38 workaholic met a Fireman 22. I got my groove back. Came back after vacation and was layed off. Yep I was Stella.

I'm 41 and just bought this movie DVD used. Whoopi looks good. Angela Bassett is super fly. That first kiss seen with the boy had me dying! Got the girl hot, than puts cold water on her. I got to do that once I get another woman.

I found this to be one of the exceptions when I liked the movie much better than the book. No stream-of-consciousness narration intention (which is fine) that actually ended up being headache-inducing run-on sentences that lasted up to a page at a time. No constant dropping of product names or then-current songs (Stella Payne had awfully mainstream musical tastes for someone who furnished her house with innovative juxtaposition of colors and fabrics and even designed some furniture). No obsessing over feminine hygiene, or judgmental rants about stinky Rastas and ugly tourists or anyone who didn't happen to have a slim taut physique. No holing up in an all-inclusive for days except for a couple of trips to Rick's Cafe (that's a vacation. That's not travel.) It didn't hurt that Angela Bassett did well as Bernadine in 'Waiting To Exhale', because she was easily cast in a second McMillan adaptation and was just as suited for Stella's assertive corporate-career role. She gave off her vibe quite convincingly. A lot of reviewers had little to say about Taye Diggs except "Oooh" "Yum" "Sigh...", whereas the book's Winston was very handsome yet skinny and not overly muscular. (And this was often emphasized, so I was a little disappointed in seeing Winston played by an actor with a calendar-guy physique.) But that's about it. I had returned from my 4th and last Reggae Sunsplash shortly before reading the book. Even though I traveled there alone for the festival and I stayed in all-inclusives each time, I did some excursion tours and went into the mountains to Nine Miles in St. Ann each time. So I was looking forward to imagery of Jamaica's natural beauty and maybe the contrasts between fancy high-rise resorts and the far more humble buildings in their shadows. Forget it. Book-Stella's eyes were usually closed to everything in Jamaica but other people's looks and clothing and- to be fair- the gorgeous tropical sea. She did an inadequate job of describing everything her eyes did take in. But as I recall, the movie mostly made up for that. I'll probably see it again soon; it's been nearly 20 years.

I was 8 years old when this came out, every adult in the Carib 5 theatre was talking about it. I was there to see either Mulan or Small Soldiers.
